The recent version of the solution has implemented as a comprehensive subset of the protocol in which most common are bitmap caching, file system, audio system and printer port redirection. It also offers printer port redirection, mappings for the international keyboards, stream compression and encryption system, automatic authentication system, support for a smartcard, remote all to support seamless mode, and network-level authentication.

Unlike most of the remote desktop connection programs, rdesktop still offering its support for the traditional RDP 4 protocol as well. For the information of the readers, it is not designed to work as a simple remote connecting program.
